Dog Photographer Melbourne: How to Prepare for Your Dog's Photography Session
Thinking about booking a dog photographer in Melbourne but worried your dog won't sit still, look at the camera or behave perfectly?
Honestly, that's not something you need to worry about.
Your dog doesn't need to be perfectly trained. They just need to be themselves. Some of the best photographs happen when a dog is running around, getting distracted, sniffing everything or giving you one of those funny looks you know so well.
Here's a little bit about how you can get ready for your session.
Your Dog Doesn't Need to Be Perfect
Their personality is what makes the photographs special
Every dog is different, some are full of energy. Some are a little nervous when they meet someone new. Others couldn't care less about the camera. That's completely fine.
As a dog photographer in Melbourne, I don't expect every dog to behave the same way. I'll work with their personality rather than trying to make them do something that doesn't feel natural.
A Normal Walk Before the Session Is Enough
Let them burn off a little energy
A normal walk earlier in the day can help your dog settle before the session. There's no need to completely wear them out, though. We still want them to have some energy to explore and interact with you. A happy, relaxed dog gives us plenty to work with.
Bring the Things They Love, a few treats and a favourite toy can help. They can be useful for getting their attention or helping them feel more comfortable. You don't need to bring a whole bag of stuff. Just the things you know your dog responds to.
Should You Groom Your Dog Before the Session? Keep them looking like themselves, If your dog needs a bath or a good brush, I'd do it a day or two before the session rather than rushing it on the morning. There's also no need to completely change their look.
I want to photograph the dog you know and love, including all those little things that make them recognisable to you.
What If Your Dog Is Nervous? We'll give them time to settle in, not every dog is going to arrive ready to run straight into a photoshoot. Some dogs need a bit of time to sniff around, explore and get used to their surroundings and that's okay.
As your dog photographer in Melbourne, I'll never expect your dog to immediately perform for the camera. We'll take things at their pace and let them become comfortable.
What If They Won't Sit Still?
That's often when the best photographs happen
Your dog doesn't need to sit perfectly for an entire session. Some of my favourite photographs happen when dogs are walking, running, looking around or simply interacting with their owners. We're not trying to create a set of obedience photos. We're trying to capture your dog as they really are.
Choosing the Right Location
The best location is one that suits your dog
There are plenty of beautiful outdoor locations around Melbourne, Geelong and the surrounding areas. But a good location isn't just about finding somewhere that looks nice in photographs. It also needs to suit your dog. Some dogs love open spaces where they can run. Others are much happier somewhere quiet with fewer distractions. We'll talk about your dog and choose somewhere that feels right for them.
What Should You Bring?
Keep it simple
For your session, I'd recommend bringing:
- Your dog's favourite treats
- A favourite toy
- Water
- Their usual collar or harness
- A lead
That's really all you need.
I'll take care of the rest.
The Best Photographs Usually Aren't the Perfect Ones
They're the ones that remind you of your dog
When you book a dog photographer in Melbourne, you're not just looking for a nice picture of your dog. You're looking for the things that you'll recognise years from now. The way they look at you. The expression they always make. The funny little quirks that only you know. Those are the photographs that become important.
And Your Favourite Photograph Shouldn't Stay on Your Phone
Turn the photographs you love into something you can see every day
Once you've chosen your favourite photographs, you can have them made into beautiful artwork for your home.
Because your favourite photograph shouldn't have to sit forgotten in your camera roll. It should be something you can walk past every day and smile at.
